Greene County, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback

Greene County, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback Greene County covers less than 160 square miles, the western portion of which became part of Shenandoah National Park in 1935. The Blue Ridge Mountains have played an important role in its history. Travel between the eastern Piedmont and the Shenandoah Valley through Swift Run Gap has been a defining feature for thousands of years, beginning with the Native American tribes. By 1736, most of the land was taken up in patents from the British Crown. A thriving village that became Stanardsville developed close to the mountains and was a coach stop on the "Richmond Road." During the 19th century, many small hamlets with schools, stores, and churches grew up in the mountains and at the crossroads. In 1838, the county was formed from the western part of Orange County, and its Jeffersonian courthouse was built. One century later, the Shenandoah National Park changed the face of the county. Today, over a million visitors to the park each year enjoy the time they can spend there.

NEW Arcadia Publishing York College of Pennsylvania, PA 9780738555164 Campus His The history of York College of Pennsylvania begins shortly after the Revolutionary War. The college traces its lineage directly to three ancestral schools. The foundation was York County Academy, an English classical school chartered in 1787. The academy merged in 1929 with York Collegiate Institute, founded in 1873. Under one roof, both schools survived the Great Depression. In 1941, the charter was amended to allow two years of college-level courses and the institution became York Junior College. With an influx of war veterans, York Junior College quickly outgrew its downtown building and in 1956 acquired land for a new campus. By 1968, it was a four-year baccalaureate-granting college with a new name. Through vintage photographs, York College of Pennsylvania celebrates the journey of the school from its humble beginnings to national recognition. Winthrop University, South Carolina, Campus History, Paperback Since its founding in 1886, Winthrop University has stood as one of South Carolina's premiere state institutions, providing education and opportunity to generations of women and men throughout the state and across the country. Education pioneer David Bancroft Johnson had the unique vision of establishing a school for training female teachers in response to a teacher shortage in Columbia and worked earnestly to acquire the necessary funds from Peabody Education Board chairman Robert C. Winthrop, for whom the school is named. Under Johnson's guidance and care, Winthrop University moved from Columbia to Rock Hill and developed into a university with a national reputation for excellence.Containing over 200 black-and-white photographs chosen from the Dacus Library's extensive archives, Winthrop University explores the school's impressive history, from its founding in the late nineteenthcentury to the present. This volume allows readers to meet prominent faculty members throughout the college's history, stroll along the picturesque campus with its inspiring architecture and historic structures, such as Main Building, Carnegie Library, and Phelps Hall, to name but a few, view the fashionable uniforms and diverse activities of some of the college's early female students, and relive some of Winthrop's special traditions of yesteryear, like Classes Night, Rat Week, Greek Day, and Halloween Happening.
